SHELBY COUNTY, OH – The Shelby County Bassmasters, in partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Shelby & Darke County (BBBS-SD), hosted their annual Youth Day Fishing Derby on August 16, 2025. This event continues to be a highlight of the year for local families and volunteers alike. Held at the private pond of longtime host Mike Meyer, owner of Meyer’s Garage and Drive Thru in Newport, the day was filled with fishing, fun, and a strong sense of community.
More than just a day of fishing, the event exemplified the power of community collaboration. Over 120 attendees, including youth from BBBS-SD programs, their mentors, and families, gathered for a day full of fun, learning, and meaningful connection. A total of 127 fish were caught by 38 young anglers, and every child went home with a free fishing pole to continue their newfound hobby.
“This event is one we never question when planning our year,” said Doug Wetzel, Event Coordinator for Shelby County Bassmasters. “The club is always excited to make this day happen. Most of us remember someone taking us fishing as kids, and it is incredibly rewarding to give that same experience to these young people. It is about more than fishing, it is about letting kids explore, learn, and just have fun. We could not do this without the help of our sponsors and community. It is truly a team effort.”
This year’s event welcomed a special guest, Retired Game Warden Dwight Edwards, known as “Bufford,” who also happens to be a proud BBBS alumnus. Bufford shared his personal story of being a “Little” in the program back in 1968, offering a heartfelt reminder of the lifelong impact of mentorship. His presence inspired both the youth and adults in attendance, showing that the seeds planted through programs like BBBS can grow into a lifetime of purpose, service, and connection.

“We were honored to have Bufford join us and share how his Big influenced his life,” said April Brubaker, Executive Director of BBBS-SD. “It was a powerful moment for everyone there, proof that what we do today can shape lives for decades.”
Bassmasters volunteers, more than 25 of them, were stationed around the pond helping youth learn the basics of baiting hooks, casting, reeling, and even developing the patience it takes to fish. Their encouragement brought out smiles and confidence in even the youngest first-time anglers.
Following the derby, attendees were treated to a picnic-style lunch and a lively award ceremony where the top catches were recognized with trophies and more.
The free fishing poles were made possible thanks to proceeds from the Shelby County Bassmasters’ weekly “boat only” Fishing Tournaments held at Lake Loramie every Thursday evening from May to September. For tournament details, contact Rick Driskell at (937) 638-2184.
“We are incredibly thankful to the Shelby County Bassmasters for hosting such a meaningful and joy-filled day for our supporters, Bigs, Littles, and their families,” said April Brubaker, Executive Director of BBBS-SD. “Their passion for fishing and commitment to youth mentorship shines through in everything they do. This event is a true reflection of THE POWER OF WE. When community members come together with a shared purpose, incredible things happen. A special thanks to Doug Wetzel, whose dedication and thoughtful planning helped make this day unforgettable for all involved.”
The success of the event was made possible by generous donations from Davis Meats, Hartzell Industries, Regal Trophy, Jason Vanderhorst, Kiwanis Club of Sidney, Meyer’s Garage & Drive Thru, Mully’s Outwest & Mully’s Drive Thru, Ohio Division of Natural Resources, Russ Michael, Sidney Foodtown, Sons of The American Legion Piqua Post 184, Spillway Bait & Tackle, and Vicky Tipps.
Kevin, a Community Big, reflected on the day:
“The Shelby County BBBS and Bassmasters worked together to make a great day for the Bigs and Littles. I enjoyed the time watching my Little fish. He was so excited to be involved in a fishing competition, and it was relaxing having so many fishing experts around to help. My Little was thrilled to keep the fishing pole he was given. Plus, the food and drinks were such a generous touch. It was a great day. Thank you BBBS and Bassmasters.”
Group activities like the Youth Fishing Derby are offered at no cost to BBBS-SD’s mentoring matches and families. They serve as meaningful ways to foster connection, community, and shared joy. These moments are essential to building strong mentoring relationships.
