Greenville, OH — After the May 2024 tornado that damaged many of the trees in the main City Park, the City of Greenville is moving forward with a comprehensive replanting plan to restore the park’s landscape.
Over the next five years, the city will plant 30 to 40 new trees each year, helping to bring back the shade and natural beauty the community has enjoyed for generations.
The first round of trees has been ordered and will be planted around the Pool and Bandshell area in November 2025. These first-year plantings will include the following varieties:
- Autumn Gold Ginkgo
- White Oak
- Bald Cypress
- Sugar Maple
- Imperial Locust
In the successive years, additional native Ohio species will be planted throughout the park, including Ohio Buckeyes, Shellbark Hickories, Beeches, Black Gum, Willows, and more. This variety will ensure a healthy and diverse tree canopy for decades to come.
The city is also finalizing a donor recognition memorial that will honor the 348 individuals and organizations who contributed to the replanting effort. The granite monument will be installed in Spring 2026, and the city will be contacting donors to confirm proper spelling of names prior to engraving.
“This project represents our community’s resilience and commitment to preserving City Park,” said Mayor Jeffrey D. Whitaker. “We are grateful for the generosity of those who helped make this restoration possible.”
