The America 250 Darke committee, the Darke County Park District and the City of Greenville would like to invite everyone to the America 250-Ohio Heritage Tree ceremony on October 3rd. In commemoration of the United States’ 250th birthday, Darke County is partnering up with America 250-Ohio to plant a native white oak tree as part of the “Heritage Trees: Planting History” initiative.
“The tree initiative aims to leave a lasting environmental legacy while celebrating Ohio’s contributions to the nation” according to the America 250-Ohio Commission. A native white oak tree will be planted in each of Ohio’s 88 counties from now through 2026.
The white oak tree was selected due to it being indigenous to the state’s environment. They thrive in various soil types and are resistant to many diseases, making them a robust choice. The tree symbolizes hope and the future, connecting to the historical importance of trees like the American Liberty Tree.
The Darke County white oak tree will be dedicated on Friday, October 3rd at 4:00pm. The ceremony will be held at the Darke County Parks’ Prairie Ridge Meadow (locally known as “Buchy’s Pasture”) on Wilson Drive across from the Garst Museum. The public is encouraged to attend to celebrate our country’s upcoming 250th celebration.
Attending the ceremony will be the America 250-Ohio Commission and special guests. Also attending will be the Fort GreeneVille Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution and Richard Montgomery Chapter Sons of the American Revolution.
The Darke County Parks will open the Anthony Wayne Peace Council House for tours from 4:30pm to 5:30pm. There will also be a short nature walk on a section of the Darke County Art Trail along the Tecumseh Bike Trail path to enjoy the “Buchy Bench” statue immediately after the ceremony.
