Painting with Intention features nationally recognized Ohio artist Chuck Marshall, whose lifelong connection to the landscape shapes a thoughtful and expressive body of work. Trained at the Art Institute of Cincinnati and the California Art Institute, Marshall has been invited to and participated in many national plein air events, including serving as a guest artist for the Plein Air Convention and Expo as a field painter, one of the top honors for a plein air artist.
Chuck Marshall’s oil paintings are compelling explorations of light, atmosphere, and the natural world, rendered with a rich, expressive touch that bridges American Impressionism and contemporary plein air traditions. His work encompasses serene landscapes — from tranquil lakeshores and wooded vistas to riverside scenes — where subtle gradations of color and masterful handling of oil paint invite the viewer into deeply felt moments of place and mood.
Across figurative and landscape subjects alike, Marshall’s brushwork balances realism with a lyrical sensitivity, capturing both the texture of his environments and the quiet poetry inherent in everyday scenes. Whether depicting the gentle glow of a sunset or the intricate interplay of light and shadow among trees and water, his paintings reflect a profound connection to the landscape and an artistic dialogue between shape, color, and emotion.
Marshall has participated in Olmsted Plein Air Invitational, Atlanta Georgia, Door County Plein Air, Wisconsin, Great American Paint Out, in the Apalachicola/ Panhandle Florida area, Wayne Plein Air, PA, En Plein Air Texas, and Finger Lakes Plein Air, where he has won best of show twice so far. His paintings have appeared in International Artist, American Artist, and Plein Air Magazine, reflecting a career marked by purpose, experience, and quiet mastery.
Marshall’s artwork will be on display from January 17th – February 28th at the Anna Bier Art Gallery, inside St. Clair Memorial Hall. The Anna Bier Art Gallery is open on Fridays from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. Join us for an artist’s reception on February 28th beginning at 6:00 pm for your chance to meet the artist!
