October 14, 1953 – March 14, 2026
Philip James Brumbaugh, of Greenville, OH, passed away on March 14, 2026 at age 72.
PJ was born in Dayton, OH, on October 14, 1953 to the late Philip D. and Nancy Brumbaugh.
He is survived by his siblings, Charlie Brumbaugh and Mary Cooper; his three children, Katie (Brollier), David, and Philip; and four grandchildren.
PJ graduated from Greenville High School in 1972, where he was a member of the football, swimming, and track teams. He was a starting defensive back on Greenville’s last undefeated football season, in fall 1971. PJ went on to play football for four years under Coach Bo Schembechler at the University of Michigan, graduating with a BA in History in 1976. PJ attended law school at Ohio Northern University, earning a JD in 1979.
PJ practiced law in Greenville and served as Darke County prosecutor. In later years he also worked at Buchy’s, Whirlpool, GTI, and Sally Beauty.
He was a lifelong member of the congregation at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, serving as a lay reader, Vestry member, and former Senior Warden.
PJ earned the highest honor of Eagle Scout and spent a summer canoeing in the Boundary Waters with Minnesota Outward Bound. Always a sports fan, he worked as a high school football referee for many years. PJ cultivated a competitive local swimming program, coaching both the Greenville High School swim team and Arcanum summer team. He was, of course, an avid supporter of University of Michigan athletics.
PJ loved his family, learning about history, and spending summers in the Upper Peninsula along the beautiful shores of Lake Michigan.
A shared memorial service will be held for PJ Brumbaugh and his mother, Nancy F. Brumbaugh, at 1:00 PM on May 2, 2026 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 201 S. Broadway, Greenville, OH.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in honor of PJ may be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Greenville, the University of Michigan football program, or a charity of your choosing.
