The State Board of Education’s online application system opened November 1 for renewal of educator licenses that expire June 30, 2026. Educators who have met renewal requirements can avoid the summer rush and longer processing times by submitting their online applications now. Review the following tips to ensure a smooth application process.
Requirements for Renewing, Aligning, Advancing or Transitioning a License
Educators must complete all renewal requirements before submitting their online applications to renew or align their licenses. Additionally, educators must complete all limitations listed on their licenses before they may renew or advance them even if they are renewing through their local professional development committees. Please see the Renew a License webpage for links to licensure requirements. Other helpful webpages include:
Please note that effective October 10, 2025, the State Board of Education no longer accepts renewal coursework completed through the Albion Center at Idaho State University from educators renewing directly through the Board for licensure renewal.
OHID Accounts
Educators must have an OHID account to access the online licensure application. Educators who previously set up an account but do not remember their passwords should go to the OHID portal and use the “Forgot your OHID or password?” link located in the sign-in box. Applicants should not create a second OHID account even if they changed their names since first establishing their accounts. See the Online CORE License System FAQs webpage for more information.
Background Checks
Those who hold an active Ohio educator license, certificate, or permit must submit FBI background checks every five years. Out-of-state applicants also need to submit BCI background checks. See the Background Checks webpage for additional information regarding background check requirements to maintain a license.
License Fees Waived for Veterans and Active Military Members
Ohio waives the fees for any educator license, permit or certificate for applicants who are veterans with honorable discharges or current service members of all branches of the United States Armed Forces, including the National Guard and Reserves. Spouses of active-duty service members also may receive a license free of charge. Applicants must upload documentation to verify their eligibility with their online licensure application.
