Chester Burns

DECEMBER 18, 1933 – JULY 8, 2023

Chester D. Burns, age 89 passed away peacefully at his home, on Saturday, July 8, 2023 at 6:16 AM. Born in Bradford, Ohio on December 18, 1933 he was a son to the late Truman & Bertha (Miller) Burns. Chester was a graduate of Gettysburg High School, class of 1952. He went on to work various jobs including Martins Hatchery, Hobarts (Whirlpool) for 36 years, and farming. He attended Oakland Church of the Brethren for many years. Chester loved to fish, garden and tend to his flowers, going to garage sales and travel with his wife, Diana. He loved the Great Darke County Fair, and never met a stranger. He was known for saying “I love a smiling face” and brought much joy to all who knew him. He made a friend everywhere he went, and on most occasions, the last one to leave. He was much loved, and will be missed by many. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his first wife Treva (Etter) Burns: sister Marcella Finnell: brothers Gerald Burns; Wayne Burns: sister-in-law Judy Burns: step-son Rick Wetzel.

Survived by his wife of 46 years, Diana (Smith) Burns: children Mark & Gloria Burns; Neal & Brenda Burns; Paula & Chris DeVone; Terry Wetzel; Tom & Denise Wetzel; Joe & Renate Wetzel: 10 grandchildren: 14 great-grandchildren: siblings Bob & Shirley Burns; Miriam & Dale Holler: brother-in-law Jim Finnell: sister-in-law Joan Burns: special neighbors Robert Dohme; Susie & Chris O’Brien: as well as numerous nieces, nephews, family members and friends.

Friends may call on the family from 4:00-7:00 PM on Tuesday July 11, 2023 at the Zechar Bailey Funeral Home, Greenville. Funeral service to be held on Wednesday, July 12, 2023 at 10:00 AM with Rev. Dr. Fred Bernhard and Pastor Dave Hemsley presiding. Burial to follow at Oak Grove Cemetery, Ft. Jefferson, Ohio. Fond memories may be shared at www.zecharbailey.com for the Burns family.
