GREENVILLE- Don’t take anything away from the Greenville boys varsity basketball team. This was a group of kids that hustled for 32 minutes Tuesday against Troy.
Coming in with a 0-3 mark, the Wave was looking for their first victory of the season.
Troy wanted to even its record at 2-2 on the season.
Give the nod to Troy as the Trojan horse galloped through the Greenville gym, posting a 65-39 victory in Miami Valley League action.
“Troy has talent but I told the kids that as a coach and a player, I don’t quit,” said Wave coach Matt Hamilton. “I won’t do anything to get anyone hurt but my kids never quit.”
The Wave came out like a ball of fire and took a early lead in the opening stanza.
However, that lead was short lived and by the end of the first quarter, Troy held a 19-13 lead.
Things went from bad to worse for the home team as Troy held a commanding 36-21 advantage at the intermission.
By the end of the third quarter, Greenville was looking at a 50-25 deficit.
“We started doing things in the fourth quarter. We were putting pressure on the, creating turnovers and converting then into points,” Hamilton quipped. “We have to learn to do that for four quarters. We came out and played well but you have to score points to win games. We didn’t do that”.
Greenville put two players in double figures led by senior Chace Drew with 13 while Liam Jasenski added 10 in support but more is needed from the rest of the team.
“We have some players that can shoot the ball, ” said Drew after the game. “Sometimes they are willing to pull the trigger and unload and there’s times they will dish it off.”
After Jasenski, Drew Hamilton added nine.
Greenville will be in action Friday at Xenia.
