DAYTON, Ohio – All are welcome to register for and attend the free African American Wellness Walk (AAWW), presented by Premier Health on Saturday, Sept. 12, at Island MetroPark, located at 101 East Helena Street in Dayton.
Now in its 26th year, participants can walk virtually or attend the in-person event. A brief recognition program will begin at 7:30 a.m., followed by the 5k walk at 8 a.m. Throughout the morning, more than 20 organizations will be in the Vendor Village providing health education, preventive care resources, and health screenings, such as blood pressure, blood sugar, and more.
For 2026, AAWW is proud to partner with the Miami Valley Urban League to deepen community engagement and increase participation in wellness initiatives across the region. Through trusted community partnerships, individuals and families will be connected to resources while expanding access in underserved communities.
The African American Wellness Walk’s mission is to raise awareness about health disparities that continue to disproportionately affect African American individuals and families while connecting community members with resources, screenings, education, and pathways to better health.
Research shows that more than 30 percent of black men and women are not getting the amount of regular physical activity recommended for good health. Research also shows that obesity and low levels of physical activity can increase the risk of diseases that disproportionately affect the African American community, including heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and stroke.
The walk serves as a trusted platform to educate, engage, and empower individuals to take proactive steps toward better health while strengthening connections between healthcare providers, community organizations, and residents.
The walk is free and open to the public. To register for the virtual or in-person walk, please visit https://runsignup.com/2026AAWW
