Darke County Center for the Arts will present the second of its Family Theatre Series shows, Virginia Repertory Theatre’s production of Harriet Tubman and The Underground Railroad, on Sunday, March 13 at Henry St. Clair Memorial Hall in Greenville. “This stirring drama shares the joys, sorrows, and challenges faced by an amazing woman who risked her life to free herself and hundreds of others from the bonds of slavery,” explained DCCA Artistic Director David Warner. According to Mr. Warner, Virginia Repertory Theatre is a highly respected organization which has created exciting, innovative theatrical productions that have toured throughout the country for over forty-five years. Curtain time for Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad is 2 p.m.
“The courage of Harriet Tubman is legendary, as it should be, as this woman helped change the world during an adventurous life which stretched beyond her well-known work as a conductor on the Underground Railroad,” said DCCA Executive Director Andrea Jordan. Ms. Jordan then went on to say, “This production unveils our nation’s history through the eyes of a fascinating woman who, despite major obstacles, was instrumental in shaping that history, making this an especially relevant presentation during National Women’s History Month.”
DCCA’s Family Theatre Series was inaugurated in 1983 to introduce youngsters to the benefits and joys of theatre while also entertaining their parents and grandparents, all at a low ticket cost. According to Ms. Jordan, multiple studies have shown that when families share positive experiences, familial bonds are strengthened through the expression and exchange of ideas which can stimulate innovation and creativity.

The series also receives support from DCCA memberships. Others providing operating support to DCCA are John R. and Miriam H. Additionally, the Ohio Arts Council helps fund this program with state tax dollars to encourage economic growth, educational excellence and cultural enrichment for all Ohioans.
These engagements are supported by the Arts Midwest GIG Fund, a program of Arts Midwest that is funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, with additional contributions from the Ohio Arts Council.
