(Darke County, OH–) Darke County Board of Developmental Disabilities (Darke DD) announced its participation in National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), an annual awareness campaign that takes place each October. The purpose of NDEAM is to honor the contributions of America’s workers with disabilities and showcase supportive workplace practices that benefit employees and employers alike. This year’s 80th anniversary theme is “Celebrating Value and Talent”.
“Celebrating America means celebrating the value and talent that all Americans – including people with disabilities – add to our nation’s workplaces and community,” stated Darke DD Superintendent Tonya Clark. “Through collaboration and inclusive thinking, we want to continue to spread the important message that all people are valued, and all people have the opportunity to find meaningful work” she continued.
Darke DD begins discussing the expectation of employment with families early in life and continues through the school-age years. The process to determine the path to employment begins in junior high and continues throughout high school through skills assessments and discussion of areas of interest. Programs like Greenville High School’s Project Life and summer work opportunities allow students to explore employment opportunities at various local employers where they gain valuable experience through hands-on learning. Adults with disabilities may also find success in employment with support from a job coach, who helps the individual be successful in their job.
“By discussing employment with individuals and families and finding each person’s gifts and talents, we can match people with their desired employment area. Employers find that people with disabilities are dedicated, timely and productive employees,” said Darke DD Superintendent Tonya Clark.
There are currently 70 individuals with developmental disabilities employed by 51 employers in Darke County. Darke DD serves approximately 500 eligible children and adults through a wide range of services and supports.
