Area Agency on Aging’s recommendations for staying safe in high heat

High summer temperatures require extra care and attention by and for older adults as those over the age of 65 are more prone to heat-related illness. It is recommended that family, friends and neighbors check on older adults in your life and/or vicinity twice a day to check for signs of heat stress, ensure they’re drinking enough water and are keeping cool. Also ensure that pets are kept in cool temps, shade and have plenty of water available.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offers this information about the impact of Heat on Older Adults including tips on how to stay cool. The Ohio Department of Aging offers information on Summer Safety for Older Adults including how to prepare, terminology to understand and more.

Please check on older adults among your acquaintance to ensure their safety and comfort through heat warnings with air-conditioning, fans, water, food, ice, light and cool clothing, and other items as needed.
