Clarence “John” Carroll

NOVEMBER 4, 1939 – OCTOBER 30, 2023

Clarence “John” L. Carroll, Jr. wandered the hills, fished the creeks, tied the flies, impacted the lives of hundreds of students and peers, read all the great books, cherished nature, nurtured his gardens, prepared amazing meals long-remembered by many, recited history’s great failures and successes with incredible detail and loved his family intensely. At the age of 83, John passed gently at home with his children close.

John, the oldest son of the late Clarence “Lee” & Sybill Carroll was married to his high-school sweetheart, Judy Dill, in Greenville Ohio in 1962. John built his career from years in the Air Force, embracing the national forests as a park ranger and then teaching middle-school children for over 30 years in the Tri Village, Ansonia and Mississinawa Valley Schools. John and Judy raised three children on a hobby farm in northern Darke county. Their surviving children are Tod (Patty) Carroll of Union City, Tim Carroll of Greenville and Jane Carroll of Greenville. Judy was lost in a tragic car accident in 1988.

Life brought John and Barbara Rogers together in marriage in 1990. Her daughters, Amy Stamm Smith Bethanne Stamm Spires and Jennifer Stamm Rhoads increased their family circle. By 2023 John had 15 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Retirement presented John with more opportunity to travel, cook, garden, tie flies, read voraciously, golf and entertain friends and family. Barbara preceded John in death in 2021.

In addition to his parents and wives, John is preceded in death by his sister Cindy. Survivors include his sister, Joyce Prasuhn of Greenville, Steve Carroll of Erylanger, KY and a sister Pat Cobb of Vero Beach, FL.

John’s constancy, integrity, academic prowess, gentle nature and natural inclination to learn and teach will be deeply missed by his children, family and friends.

A celebration of life will be held Friday, 11/10/2023 at 11 a.m. at Ansonia First Church of God, 750 S Main St. Ansonia Oh 45303. There will be a meal and visiting hours immediately following at the same location.
