The National Association of School Nurses developed a course to assist school nurses as they address chronic absenteeism for health-related reasons. School nurses can help students with chronic health conditions to better manage their conditions ꟷ keeping them in school. Integral in identifying students with unmet physical and mental health needs, school nurses often connect families to medical resources. School nurses in four states piloted the content for this course. Learn more about the course, including how to earn Continuing Nursing Education credit, in the association’s course catalog.
School leaders can collaborate with nurses to discuss accessing the course, identify key takeaways gained from the course and brainstorm ways school nurses can contribute to school and district absence intervention procedures. When students are healthy, it is easier for them to be in class and engaged in learning. School nurses are a valuable partner to help students get to school every day.
