DAYTON, Ohio – Solar eclipse viewing on April 8 disrupted normal blood collection across the Miami Valley resulting in a low supply of multiple blood types, including a critical shortage of type O.
Solvita is reducing and redirecting blood shipments based on the most immediate need and encouraging more community members to donate. Solvita is appealing to people who have never donated to help with this need.
Everyone who registers to donate a the Solvita Dayton Center, 349 S. Main St. now through Monday, April 15 will receive a Kroger $10 gift card plus the Solvita umbrella.
Walk-ins are welcome at the Solvita Dayton Center. Donors can make an appointment on the Donor Time app, call (937) 461-3220, or visit www.donortime.com.
Solvita must average seven to eight mobile blood drives per day and at least 300 donors per day to meet the needs of its partner hospitals. Only one blood drive took place on April 8 and there were only 68 donor registrations area wide. That represented a 63% decline in donors compared to the Monday after Easter, and a 76% decline compared to the previous Monday.
You can save time while helping save lives by using “DonorXPress” to complete the donor questionnaire before arriving at a blood drive. Find DonorXPress on the Donor Time App or at www.solvita.org/donorxpress.
