Darke County Economic Development, Partnering For Success, is pleased to announce that it has received a $2,500 grant from the AES Ohio Foundation to support the Darke County STEAM Camp. This generous contribution will help provide local junior high students with valuable hands-on learning experiences in science, technology, engineering, agriculture, and mathematics (STEAM).
Established in 1985, the AES Ohio Foundation is dedicated to reinvesting in communities across its 24-county service territory. Since its inception, the Foundation has awarded more than $46.7 million in grants to support educational and community initiatives.
Coordinated by Darke County Economic Development, STEAM Camp is a dynamic, interactive day camp designed for students entering 7th and 8th grades. The camp offers participants the opportunity to explore the world of STEAM and discover the diverse career opportunities available locally. Through partnerships with various industry leaders in Darke County, students engage in hands-on learning activities and site visits, providing them with real-world insights into potential future careers.
Olivia Schmitmeyer, Career Connections Coordinator, DCED shared, “We are incredibly grateful to AES Ohio Foundation for their generous support in funding our STEAM camp program. This grant will provide 7th and 8th grade students with the opportunity to explore the exciting world of STEAM in a hands-on, engaging environment. We’re proud to be part of a community that values education and is dedicated to inspiring the next generation of innovators.”
“STEAM Camp, formerly Summer Manufacturing Camp, has been a very important part of the programming for the DCED office for the past six years,” stated Mike Bowers, DCED Director. “It has given students entering 7th and 8th grade a valuable hands-on opportunity to see what STEAM is and what STEAM careers look like right here close to home. It is a real-life experience that will pay dividends for this workforce of the future.”
2025 will mark the sixth year of this impactful program. Each year, students build essential skills in communication, problem-solving, and teamwork, preparing them for future success. The camp concludes with a Friday afternoon closing program where campers are recognized for their achievements and share their experiences. This event highlights the growth and enthusiasm of students as they reflect on their week of exploration and learning.
Darke County Economic Development extends its gratitude to past and present partners who have contributed to the success of this program and looks forward to a great 2025 STEAM Camp.
