In a landmark move towards inclusivity and accessibility, Darke DD celebrated the grand opening of the first permanent public sensory-friendly room and universal changing table at the Darke County Fairgrounds. This initiative, driven by the 2023 Fair Royalties Elizabeth Brewer and Andrew Wuebker in collaboration with Darke DD, aims to create a more welcoming environment for all visitors.
Tonya Clark, Superintendent of the Board of Darke DD, expressed her enthusiasm about the project. “Darke County is receiving $550,000 in grant funding, and this sensory room and universal changing table are just a few of the projects we are undertaking with this support,” Clark noted. The new additions are a testament to Darke DD’s commitment to enhancing accessibility and inclusivity within the community.
The development of the sensory-friendly room and universal changing table involved a collaborative effort from various local organizations and individuals. Brumbaugh Construction played a pivotal role by volunteering their time to renovate the space. Additionally, students from Greenville High School’s Construction Class gained valuable hands-on experience through the demolition and construction work, working alongside Brumbaugh’s team to build the new walls.
The Versailles High School Interior Design Class also contributed significantly. The students conducted research into the essentials of a sensory room, including optimal color schemes and necessary features, and presented their design ideas to the project team. Their input helped shape a space that is both functional and comforting.
Clark took a moment to acknowledge the generous contributions of all the vendors involved. Many offered their time, provided discounts, or waived their fees to support the project. A sign listing these contributors’ names has been prominently displayed on the outside of the building as a gesture of gratitude.
The new sensory-friendly room and universal changing table are strategically located next to the Sheriff’s quarters, to the right of the grandstands, ensuring easy access during the Darke County Fair and other major events held at the fairgrounds. This facility is set to enhance the experience for all fairgoers, providing a supportive space for individuals with sensory processing needs and ensuring accessibility for those requiring universal changing facilities.
The opening of these new amenities marks a significant milestone in making the Darke County Fairgrounds a more inclusive and accommodating venue, reflecting a growing commitment to accessibility and community support.
