Darke County Center for the Arts announces performance lineup for first annual Make Music Darke County on Monday, June 21 and encourages everyone to join us for a day of FREE music by Darke county performers. “DCCA is delighted to be presenting local festivities celebrating music and the Summer Solstice while supporting local performers,” shared Andrea Jordan DCCA Executive Director.
Performances start at 11 am on the Greenville Library lawn featuring 2-4-U Winds, Tami Tennison/flute & Mike Houser/clarinet performing classical, jazz, to popular music; followed by Providence Road Duo, Jerry & Chris Asbury performing 60s & 70s Gospel and Country; Kim Bohler on flute; concluding with Percussion Storytime featuring Greenville Children’s Librarian Miss Joanna reading a book while youngsters play a percussion instrument along with the story (instruments will be available or you can bring your own). The Greenville Public Library will also have harmonicas and a list of online instructors giving lessons available, while they last.
At noon, the Darke County Employee Choir will be performing In front of Darke County Courthouse. Evening performances will be at YOLO Park in downtown Greenville starting at 6 pm with Joseph Helfrich; followed by Peggy Emerson on old fashioned autoharp playing folk/gospel; Carter Qualls on guitar and vocals; vocalist Katelyn Hanes; Zachary Perry hip-hop artist; and concluding with a drum circle performance. Each participant will be performing for about 20 minutes. “We have a diverse group of performers everyone can enjoy and a variety of times and locations to fit your schedule, be sure to come on out and support our local performing artists!” concluded Jordan.
Make Music Day started in France in 1982 where it has become a national holiday, the “Fete De La Musique” created a music festival featuring free music being performed almost everywhere; fourteen years ago, the festival crossed the Atlantic with the debut of Make Music New York, and has since spread to more than 80 communities across the United States resulting in 5,383 free concerts being performed in 1,862 locations on June 21, 2019. Last year when the COVID pandemic made public gatherings impossible, Make Music Day featured more than 1600 virtual and socially-distanced events across the U.S.
