The Department of Education is accepting nomination applications for teachers who serve in a school district to join the Ohio Educator Standards Board for the September 2023 through June 2025 term. Board members research, develop and recommend standards, processes and policies related to the teaching profession, teacher evaluation and licensure. The following seats are open on the board:
- Two seats for elementary school teachers;
- Middle school teacher; and
- Secondary school teacher.
The Department will accept nomination applications through Feb. 19. Applicants may nominate themselves to serve. Nominees must secure a letter of support from their district superintendent and submit it to Shawna Gibson to be eligible to serve.
The Department will forward qualifying nomination applications to the Executive Committee of the State Board of Education for consideration. The Executive Committee will select two nominees for each open seat on the Educator Standards Board. From these nominees, the State Board of Education will appoint one teacher per open seat at its State Board meeting.
Serving on the Educator Standards Board is a two-year voluntary commitment. The board meets seven times each year in Columbus. The board’s committees meet Thursday evenings, and the full board meets Friday. The Department covers costs associated with travel, hotels and substitute teachers but does not pay for meals.
