Don Edward Slyder

August 26, 1930  –  October 15, 2022

Don E. Slyder, 92, of Ansonia, Ohio, passed away early Saturday, October 15, 2022, at his home.

He was born on August 26, 1930, in Ansonia, to the late J. Harold and Leah (Amspaugh) Slyder.

In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by his siblings, Madge, Maxine, Wayne, Mark, and Gene.

Don was born and raised in Ansonia. He was a 1948 graduate of Ansonia High School. He grew up on his family farm and continued the tradition when he had his own. Don had a passion and talent for finish carpentry and put those skills to use for Ansonia Lumber, retiring after 46 years, earning the nickname “Sawdust”. He has left a legacy of gifts and projects that he has built for his family and friends. He took great pride in his projects and enjoyed teaching and sharing his knowledge. He was devoted to his family and enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s events.

Don raised and showed ponies for 40 years and loved going to the Great Darke County Fair. He and Shirley attended the Trinity Lutheran Church in Versailles, Ohio for over 60 years and they loved getting together with nine other couples known as the “Fossil Friends”.

Don is survived by his wife of 69 years, Shirley (Harmeson) Slyder, whom he married on August 2, 1953; his children, James D. Slyder of Justin, Texas, Lynn Ann (Kent) James of Ansonia, and Thomas J. Slyder, Lombard, Illinois; his grandchildren, Jennifer (Jason) Elsas of Bowie, Texas, Jesse (Emily) Slyder of Justin, Texas, Jay Slyder of Stephensville, Texas, Austin (Amanda) James of Versailles, Ohio, Brandon James of Charlotte, North Carolina, Taylor (fiance, Connor Linde) Slyder of Portland, Maine, Mallory Slyder of South Lake, California, and Allie Slyder of Louisville, Kentucky; his great grandchildren, Jalynn, Jed, Gloria, Mary, Margaret, Violet, John, and Evelyn. Don is also survived by his sister, Marilyn Swallow of Versailles, and numerous other in-laws, nieces, nephews, and friends.

A celebration of Don’s life will be held at 11:30 AM on Saturday, October 22, 2022, at Tribute Funeral Homes, Greenville Campus, with Pastor Ippy Mwakabonga officiating. Burial will follow in Ansonia Cemetery.

His family will be receiving guests on Saturday from 9:30 AM until the time of the service at 11:30 AM, at the funeral home.
