Douglas A. Filbrun

October 23, 1949 — October 9, 2024

Douglas A. Filbrun, 74, of New Paris, Ohio, passed away after a hard-fought battle with cancer, with his wife by his side, on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, at the Dayton VA Hospital.

He was born on October 23, 1949, in Richmond, Indiana to the late Daniel and Willodean (Commons) Filbrun.

Doug is survived by his wife of 52 years, Ruth (Frech) Filbrun, whom he married on June 24,1972; his siblings, Shirley (Dale) Wright of West Manchester, and Jeanette Eakins of Dayton; his 22 nieces and nephews; numerous great nieces and nephews; many brother and sister in-laws; and his close friend, Mike Reynolds.

As a child, Doug helped his father on their family farm. He attended Monroe High School before enlisting in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He continues to serve his country honorably for the next five years, completing two tours in Vietnam. His honorable service to our country allowed Doug to be a lifetime member of the New Paris American Legion and the VFW. After his military service, Doug received his associates degree and began his career as a master electrician. He worked for various companies and retired in 2014 from Color-Box in Richmond.

In his free time, Doug loved to be outdoors. He enjoyed going hunting and fishing. Doug spent many hours watching Purple Martin birds and tending to his garden. He earned his pilots license and developed a passion for flying. As a lifetime NRA member, Doug enjoyed guns, going shooting, and reloading his own ammo. He was also a member of the Castine Church. Although Doug has many passions, his family was his number one priority. He was a devoted husband of 52 years and a caring father figure to his many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Doug’s life will be held at 3:00 PM, Saturday, October 12, 2024, at Tribute Funeral Homes, New Madison Campus. Burial, with full military honors, will follow in Greenmound Cemetery.
