Drugs

On December 13th, 2023, at approximately 9:16 PM police observed a Blue 2003 Jeep Liberty being operated north bound in the 400 block of South Broadway. The vehicle was displaying Indiana License plate CDW842. Through LEADS/NCIC PO confirmed the owner of the vehicle was Eric Garringer. Through LEADS/NCIC PO also confirmed Eric’s drivers license were under an active Indiana Suspension from 6/13/2015 to indefinite. A traffic stop was made on the listed vehicle at the listed location. PO approached the vehicle and advised the operator of the vehicle PO stopped the vehicle due to the owner being under a suspension. The operator of the vehicle advised he was not the owner, but when PO asked for his name he admitted that he was Eric Garringer. PO also confirmed the passenger to be John Rector. PO returned to his cruiser to write out a citation to Eric for driving under suspension, at this time PO also requested a K9 from Union City, Indiana Police Department. While writing the citation Eric asked if he could call someone for a ride, and he was advised that he should call for a valid driver to come pick him up. Once the citation was complete PO gave Eric his copy advising him of his mandatory court date and violation. Eric advised he was going to sit and wait for his ride and PO advised him he would wait with him so he did not drive away. While waiting for Eric’s ride, PO used Flock License Plate Reader system to check his vehicle through their system. PO was able to determine Eric’s vehicle was just in Trotwood on Salem Avenue at 8:11 PM. Due to the new Information PO asked Eric if he would exit the vehicle to speak with the PO and he consented. While speaking to Eric he advised that he was just released from Wayne Hospital before he was stopped. When PO asked him more Eric advised that he spent the last day and half at Wayne Hospital and his vehicle would have also been at the hospital the entire time until he was released just recently. This information did not match with the Flock Image that showed his vehicle in Trotwood. Eric was then placed into the rear of the PO’s vehicle until the K9 could arrive. PO then asked the passenger, John to exit the vehicle. When PO questioned John about where they were coming from and what they were doing, he said “You already know”. So PO asked him if they just went to Dayton to buy drugs and he advised yes. John admitted that they went to a corner in Trotwood and Eric did a hand to hand transaction for the drugs. John was placed into the rear of another PO’s car, who was on scene assisting. Then the Union City, Indiana K9 arrived on scene to perform an open air sniff on the vehicle. The result of the sniff was a positive alert. While performing a probable cause search on the vehicle PO located a clear baggie hidden between the driver seat and the center console. The baggie contained an unknown substance with the appearance of methamphetamine. The bag was later weighed on a tared unofficial scale and the weight was approximately 14.7 grams. While searching the vehicle PO also located a glass meth pipe in the same location as the drugs. The items were taken as evidence and Eric was placed under arrest. Eric was also mirandized before questioning. Eric admitted to purchasing the drugs and that he bought what he thought was a half ounce for $75. Eric also admitted that the substance was methamphetamine. The vehicle was towed by Hot Rod’s towing. Eric was transported to the Darke County Jail and released to staff. The evidence was transported to the Greenville Police department and placed into property along with a DVD containing audio and video of the traffic stop.
