The Harry D. Stephens Memorial Trust continued its support to Empowering Darke County Youth recently with a major donation. The Stephens Memorial Trust Fund has helped support Empowering programs since 2018.
“By giving to Empowering Darke County Youth,” Board President Dianna Wagner said, “our community will be enriched.” Harry D. Stephens Memorial Trust began in 1990. Distributions from the fund are made for the public benefit of the residents of the Greenville area.
The Harry D. Stephens Board of Trustees includes Wagner, President, Dr. Michael Fourman, Scott Zumbrink, Greg Zechar, and Sue Holzapfel.
Empowering After School Programs focus on helping students struggling with their academics. Programs are currently being held on three school district campuses: Ansonia, Arcanum-Butler, and the largest, Greenville Elementary and Middle School. Student participation in all programs is limited to teacher recommendation due to current pandemic-related health restrictions. The Greenville program has enrolled 41 students, grades 1-8, and can work with as many as 17 students in consecutive sessions, depending on the day.
After School Programs include the use of supervised volunteers. The Greenville After School Program uses students from Edison State Community College who, in any year, will provide about a third of the total hours of Empowering tutoring support. Since its formation in 2016, Empowering Darke County Youth has provided more than 20,000 hours of academic support to over 1,000 Darke County students.
The Empowering Mission: Empowering Darke County Youth is a 501c3 United Way Partner Agency providing After School and Summer Tutoring programs to assist students in the areas of reading, language arts and math with the goal of Strong Students for a Strong Community.
