CANTON- It didn’t take long for the Kirtland Hornets to strike and put the backs of Versailles against the wall as the Tigers would fall 32-15 to the Hornets.
“I’m very proud of this football team,” said Versailles coach Ryan Jones. “It’s been a very special year. What this team has accomplished has been tremendous. They played together until the end. “
It was also a day when a kid named Willie Beers would be the biggest thorn for Versailles.
Beers did it all.
He recovered a fumble, returned a kickoff for a score and had a interception for a score.
No matter what happened, everything bounced in the favor of Kirtland.
The Hornets scored the first two touchdowns before the Tigers were able to answer.
That answer came at the 10:55 mark of the second quarter on a 31 yard scoring pass.
After that, it was all Kirtland.
On the ensuing kickoff, Beers rumbled for a 90 yard return for the score and the Hornets would hold a 19-7 lead at the break.
“It’s a quick high and a quick low, especially when you’re playing a good opponent” said Jones. “We preach to these kds on how to deal with these setbacks.”
“That is a well coached team,” admitted Jones.of the Kirtland coaching staff
