James C. Saylor age 93, of South of Palestine passed away at 5:50 am Wednesday, December 20, 2023, at EverHeart Hospice Inpatient Unit at Wayne HealthCare in Greenville.
James was born February 28, 1930, in Portland, Oregon, to the late Sherl & Ellen (Johnson) Saylor. He was also preceded in death by a brother, John D. Saylor; brother-in-law, Ralph Showalter; and niece, Lynn Saylor.
James is survived by his wife of 67 years, Phyllis A. (Showalter) Saylor whom he married October 21, 1956; son, Charles Saylor & Nancy Mannix of Troy; daughter, Cathy Saylor of Denver, Colorado; grandchildren, Catherine & Romiro Pena of Denver, Colorado, and Zachary Mayo of Columbus; great granddaughter, Anna Pena; brother, George Saylor of Long Beach, California; sister-in-law, Jo Anne Saylor of Greenville; niece, Kelly Saylor of Arcanum; and cousins.
James served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War on the Aircraft Carrier USS Tarawa which served 2 Mediterranean Deployments and 2 World Deployments. James was a lifelong farmer and retired from Corning Glass in Greenville with 35 years of service in the trades department. James served as Director of the Florida Flywheelers Antique Engine Club.
A celebration of James’s life will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday, December 23, 2023, at Zechar Bailey Funeral Home in Greenville with Pastor Todd Reish officiating. Burial will follow in Hollansburg Cemetery with full military honors conducted by the Greenville Veteran’s Honor Guard. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 12:00 to 2:00 pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to EverHeart Hospice in Greenville.
