Janet R. (Cross) Abernathy, age 90, of New Madison, Ohio, passed away surrounded by family at her home on Friday, January 17, 2025.
She was born on December 9, 1934, in Watford, England, to the late Graham and Louise (Kress) Cross.
In addition to her parents, Janet was preceded in death by her husband, Ken Abernathy, whom she married on June 6, 1953, and who passed on January 22, 2020; her daughters, Susan Ausbrook and Deborah Howard; her son-in-law, Donald Howard; her granddaughters, Nicole Abernathy and Keesha Abernathy; and her best friends, Doris Bowers and Dora Jane Waymire.
Janet is survived by her children, Steve (Sherri) Abernathy of Meso, Arizona, Larry Abernathy of New Madison, Scott (Charlene) Abernathy of Covington, Ohio, and Lisa Kramer of Greenville; her grandchildren, Nathan Ausbrooks, Jessica (Greg) Quick, Rachel (Michael) Smith, Mandy (Dan) Hileman, Jamie Abernathy, Chelsea (Cody) Dickensheets, Briana (Mitch) Parin, Deceena Gains, Jessica Abernathy, Jason Ignaffo, and Becky (Ryan) Borowske; and her 23 great grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchild.
Janet spent a majority of her life as a homemaker, raising her beautiful family. After they were out of the house, Janet worked for several jewelers around the area. Janet never knew a stranger and loved conversing with others. In her free time, she enjoyed baking, cooking, and sewing. Janet enjoyed playing cards, which she did for over 30 years with a group of dear friends. Janet enjoyed traveling with her husband, especially to Florida. She and Ken also enjoyed square dancing and sharing it with their family.
A celebration of Janet’s life will take place at 3:00 PM on Sunday, January 26, 2025, at Tribute Funeral Homes, Greenville Campus with Pastor Rick Gutheil officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery, Fort Jefferson.
Guests may visit with Janet’s family on Sunday from 1:00 PM until 3:00 PM at the funeral home.
