Joseph Leroy Sphar, age 95, of Greenville, passed away on Sunday, January 7, 2024 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born on July 8, 1928 in Troy, Ohio to the late Walter and Minnie Sphar.
In addition to his parents, Joseph is preceded by his son, Leon Sphar; siblings, Ruth Jay Heffner and Robert Sphar; stepsister, Viola; grandson, Joe Polhamus; great granddaughter, Bonnie Sphar; and son-in-law, Cliff Polhamus Jr.
He is survived by his loving wife, Lois Sphar of 65 years; children, Delena Polhamus, Bruce (Sharolyn) Sphar, Minelva Ridenour (James Boggs), and Theressa (John) Hammar; 7 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and 15 great great grandchildren; sister, Shirley (Jimmy) Williams.
Joseph was a veteran of the United States Army. He was a stockcar driver for many years and held the fastest qualifying time at Boone Hill, Troy Speedway. He also really enjoyed watching races, listening to and playing country music. Joseph worked at Hobart Brothers for 25 years. He managed mobile home parks for many years, including Hecht’s Landing in Celina for 27 years and Sherwood Forest in Greenville for 22 years. Joseph owned Sphar’s Salvage Yard in Maria Stein for about 5 to 6 years. He was a life member of Moose Lodge #2695 of Troy, VFW Post #5486 of Troy, Redman’s Troy, and Amvets Post #66 of Pleasant Hill. Joseph also belonged to the Masonic Temple in Dayton, Ohio.
