Mark Powell

Our beloved brother, Mark Powell, passed away March 17, 2022. He was a resident of the Brethren Retirement Community in Greenville, Ohio for the past five years.

He was born on March 14, 1956, in Greenville, Ohio; the son of Donald Powell and Mary (Swabb) Powell Cassell. He was preceded in death by his father and mother; his stepmother, Elsie Weng Powell; beloved grandparents, Gerald Armstrong, and Viola (Shuff) Powell Armstrong; infant sister, Kathy Powell and his brother, Stuart Powell (died April 23, 2021) and Stuart’s wife Debbie Thwaits Powell; nephew, Brandon Powell; stepsister, Tammy Cassell Vines; and stepbrother Robert Weng.

Survivors include siblings, Bethany and husband, Jim Carres of The Villages, Florida, Donna and husband, Tom Beam of Zanesfield, Ohio and The Villages, Florida, Ben and wife, Tracy Cassell of Kingsport, Tennessee; stepfather, Gerald Cassell of Gray, Tennessee; and stepsister, Canda Weng of Augusta, Georgia; and nieces and nephews. He is also survived by childhood friends, Tom Hathaway, and Teresa Green, who were there for him during his battle with cancer.

Mark graduated from Greenville Senior High School in 1974. He attended The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio and Wright State University Lake Campus between Celina and St. Mary’s (Western Ohio Branch Campus). Mark worked at Kroger, in Powell, Ohio for almost ten years, retiring in 2014. He loved his job at Kroger bagging groceries and any other task that needed done. Mark enjoyed watching high school and collegiate sports, and especially football and watching wrestling on television. He also loved traveling and was ready to get in any car going anywhere, listening to 70s music like Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bad Company, Dr. John and many more artists.

Mark has been lovingly cared for by the staff of the Brethren Retirement Community, Rosewood 4th Floor nursing staff, Oakwood 3rd floor nursing staff, Brethren HomeCare care givers, EverHeart Hospice and Wayne HealthCare. Special thanks to his doctor, Dr. Rehman, for his compassionate care, and to Joy Kennitt, his driver from BRC who took such care of him on his doctor visits and trips for radiation.

Burial will take place in Greenville Union Cemetery, 200 West Street, Greenville, Ohio. A memorial service is being planned for a later date.
