On Memorial Day, Greenville citizens paid tribute honoring the fallen and also thanked all who are currently serving or have served inn our Armed Forces.
It started with a free lunch for veterans and accompanying spouses from 11AM to 12:30PM at the American Legion Post 140 on North Ohio Street.
At 1PM the first ceremony took place at the Memorial Bridge. From there the Darke County Honor Guard led the parade to the Greenville Union Cemetary for the main ceremony.
Mayor Steve Williams welcomed the attending citizens and the guests, Pastor Alan Knoke (St. Paul’s Lutheran Church) did the invocation.
The NJROTC led the Pledge of Allegiance and Lilly Mowery, NJROTC Cadet Commanding Officer recited the Gettysburg Address.
Ben Thaeler, District Director from the Office of Congressman Warren Davidson reminded the attendents that it is important to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice not just on Memorial Day but everyday because we enjoy the freedom because of those who have given all.
Featured Guest Speaker Dr. Douglas D. Scott (USN Retired) talked about why we were having this ceremony. He said that as of September 2021, the USA has lost more than a Million brave men and women with a diverse background of races and religions, united by the commitment to protect our nation.
He also said that it is important to also remember and honor those who are prisoners of war (POWs) and missing in action (MIA).
After Dr. Scott’s speech, wreaths were laid down by VFW Post 7262, VFW Post 7262 Auxiliary, DAV Chapter 57, DAV Chapter 57 Auxiliary, American Legion Post 140 and Fort GreeneVille Chapter DAR.
A 21 Gun Salute (Darke County Honor Guard) and Taps and the Benediction closed this event in honor of those who made the ultimate sacrifice, the POW and the MIA.
