October 2024 is National Arts and Humanities Month

Commissioners Signed & Issued Proclamation at October 8th Meeting

Darke County Commissioners, Matt Aultman, Marshall Combs, and Larry signed and presented Darke County Center for the Arts (DCCA) Executive Director, Andrea Jordan and Director of Visual Arts, Jennifer Overholser a Proclamation naming October 2024 as National Arts and Humanities Month and encouraged citizens to celebrate and promote the arts and culture in Darke County.

October is National Arts & Humanities Month (NAHM), a time to recognize the importance of culture and the arts in America. NAHM was established in 1993 to encourage Americans to become lifelong participants in the arts.

“DCCA is grateful for our local officials and community recognizing and celebrating that arts and humanities enhance and enrich lives, supporting DCCA’s mission and value the importance of promoting and presenting accessible arts experiences across Darke County.” shared Andrea Jordan, DCCA Executive Director.

 Reading the proclamation, Commissioner Aultman stated “WHEREAS, the arts and culture industry also strengthens our economy by generating $151.7 billion in total economic activity annually, $29 billion in government revenue, and by supporting the full-time equivalent of 5 million jobs;  WHEREAS, the arts and humanities are a vital part of the nation’s economy, and the creative economy drives tourism, commerce, supports American workers, makes up 4.3% of the annual GDP and is a $1.1 trillion industry (BEA Satellite Account on Arts and Culture, 2022); WHEREAS,  pieces of creative economy legislation would further support the development of this important part of the economy: The CREATE Act (S. 3759 and H.R. 7281), the Creative Workforce Investment Act (S.3572 and H.R. 6935), the Performing Artist Tax Parity Act (S.4747 and H.R. 2874\1), and the CREATE Art Act (H.R. 7918).”

DCCA, the county’s non-profit arts council presents and promotes performing and fine arts encouraging cultural enrichment. This October there are opportunities whatever your interest to enjoy arts and culture across Darke County, including the October 12th DCCA Artists Series performance with TAKE 3 at 7 pm in St. Clair Memorial Hall. Their music blends music styles bringing new experiences where ROCK meets BACH. TAKE 3 was created and is lead by Lindsay Deutsch, Yanni’s featured violin soloist. The group performed their inspiring works for Darke County High School students this week delivering a message of hope, inspiration, and the importance of following your dreams. October 17th Cleveland singer/songwriter described as a “complex guitar acrobat” Diana Chittester performs at BEANZ kicking off the Coffee House Series. Chittester’s latest album PARADOX was voted BEST ALBUM of 2019 in Cleveland Scene Magazine.

In addition to offering an Artists Series, Family Theatre Series and Special Events at St. Clair Memorial Hall, DCCA presents a Coffee House Series at venues across the county and Arts In Education programs to all Darke County public school students. Each summer DCCA partners with the Greenville Public Library to present BBQ & Blues the second Friday in July, a weeklong theater residency with Missoula Children’s Theatre offered free for local youth, and Make Music Darke County, featuring the annual Katie G & Friends Community Concert “We’re All In This Together” a musical celebration of community, inclusion, and acceptance with Darke County DD as part of the worldwide musical celebration on June 21st, the first day of summer. DCCA also oversees the Anna Bier Gallery located in Henry St. Clair Memorial Hall and recently created the Darke County Art Trail celebrating public art in our community and bringing new public art installations and opportunities across Darke county.

Darke County Center for the Arts is also committed to the preservation of Henry St. Clair Memorial Hall and welcomes all patrons regardless of race, color, religion, socioeconomic background, or physical impairment.
