Richard “Dick” Detling

July 3, 1933 — June 15, 2024

Richard “Dick” S. Detling, 90, of Union City, OH passed away on June 15, 2024 at the Brethren Retirement Community. He was born on July 3, 1933, to the late C.E. and Harriet (Dunkleberger) Detling.

 Richard was a proud member of the Ansonia High School inaugural football team of 1949. Richard graduated from Ansonia High School in 1951 and graduated from Miami University in 1955. Upon graduation, Richard served in the United States Marine Corps from 1955 – 1958, and continued in the Reserves thereafter. 

 Richard met his wife of 69 years, Jeanette Weiss, in his junior year of high school while sitting for the state of Ohio scholastic test at Miami University. They were married on September 11, 1954; she preceded him in death in February 2024. 

 Since 1963, Richard had lived in Darke County and had been involved in farming, specializing in tomato farming. Richard was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, served on the church council, served on the Mississinawa Valley school board, and was active in the Ohio Farm Bureau. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, playing Euchre, and cheering on the Cincinnati Reds. 

 In addition to his parents and wife, Richard is preceded in death by siblings Esther Haines, Jeanette Farcich, Lynn Detling, Luella Cox, Norma Bradley, Marvin Detling, Marlene Smogor, Wayne Detling, and Martha Brown; daughter in law Christine “Chris” Detling; and grandchildren Sarah Beth Wright and Spencer Wright. 

 He is survived by children; Rex Detling of Greenville Ohio, Lisa (Lenny) Wright of Ponte Vedra, Florida, and James (Rebecca) Detling of Greenville, Ohio; grandchildren Abby (John)Allbritton, Ryan Detling, Elyse (Joe) Brown, Chelsea Detling, Robby (Alexis) Detling, Andy (Olivia) Detling, Annie (fiancé John Marees) Wright, Natalie Milligan, and Graham Milligan, seven great grandchildren; sister Harriet (Cazmo) Lukrich of Los Altos California; sister in laws, Valerie Detling, Myrna Detling, and Sue Detling, and brother in law Robert Brown. 

 The family is grateful for the care Richard received at the Brethren Retirement Center and with EverHeart Hospice. 

 Visitation will take place on Friday, June 21st, from 10:00 to 11:30 am at Trinity Lutheran Church 1470 IN- 28, Union City, IN. Funeral services will begin at 11:30 am. Graveside services to follow at Greenville Township Cemetery. 

 Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church or EverHeart Hospice in Richard’s memory.
