FT. LORAMIE— Spirit EMS offers a wide variety of services. While the company is known largely for emergency and non-emergency medical transportation, it also provides EMS coverage of special events.
Spirit has provided special EMS coverage for large crowd events such as Eldora Speedway, The Great Darke County Fair, speed boat races, motocross races, motorcycle races, and just recently, Country Concert 2022.
At the height of the event, approximately twenty Spirit EMS professionals were on site working the three-day musical festival.
“We have some certified EMS personnel from the outside that actually come in as well to work our special events so we can maintain normal operations,” Operations Manager, Brian Brown said. “Normal shifts are about twelve to fourteen hours, but some prefer to combine the shifts together and will work a 24-hour shift.”
With an average attendance that’s almost ten times the population of Greenville, the Spirit staff treat the festival like a city of its own.
The event crew deals with a wide variety of different medical calls. “We see all sorts of dehydration and just heat exhaustion in general. Five to ten percent of what we do there are actual medical emergencies. We have people with chest pain, shortness of breath, things that people would call 911 for normally, but it just happens because they’re here. This is very much like a large city,” Brown shared.
Spirit had a large first aid center at the festival entrance. “We have eight beds here, one of them being for critical care,” Brown said. “We also keep a tub of cold water for patients suffering from heat exhaustion. We keep various medical supplies on site to tend to the care of the patient so they can be treated and then get back to enjoying the concert whenever possible.”
Additional services Spirit EMS offers include long distance transports, mobile intensive care units, along with basic and advanced life support stretcher transports.
