Teacher Based Teams and the Ohio Improvement Process at Greenville High School

Many schools throughout the state of Ohio take part in a process called the Ohio Improvement Process (OIP). This is an organizational strategy that gives school districts a template to perform a traditional plan-do-study-act cycle. There are three different levels of the OIP process, Teacher Based Teams (TBTs), Building Leadership Teams (BLTs), and the District Leadership Team (DLT). The DLT is composed of central office personnel, principals, school psychologists, teachers, and parents. There is a BLT for each building in the district. At GHS our BLT is composed of administrators, guidance counselors, and members from each of out TBTs. Teachers make up the composition of the TBTs and are organized at GHS by grade level. The TBTs meet once per week and communicate their discussions and actions to the BLT. The BLT meets once per month to discuss TBT progress and support.

The Freshman and Sophomore TBT’s are working on tracking students’ grades and then providing interventions to those students who are struggling in specific subjects. Many of these interventions are provided during the regular class period. In other cases, we will assign students specific areas to go during their Wave Time. For example, if you are struggling with your math class you would be assigned to see one of the math teachers for your grade level to get extra help.

The Junior and Senior TBT’s are tracking students’ graduation plans and credits towards graduation. These groups along with the guidance department will communicate with individual students who are “at-risk” of not graduating. Due to the number of graduation pathways, and the different paths our individual students take, the interventions provided to these students vary greatly. In some cases, the intervention is providing them with help in credit recovery. In other cases, teachers may provide support for their End of Course exams. In other cases, it may be helping students prepare for the Career Tech classes and the workforce.

Greenville High School’s TBT’s and BLT use the district and building OIP goals as guidelines for their work. The OIP goals are:

1. For the 2021-22 school year, at least 80% of students will meet the proficient level on two or more additional state assessments in each building, earn a B or better on the progress measure, and earn a B in K-3 literacy.

2. For the 2021-22 school year, students with disabilities will achieve a performance index of 64.4 or higher in reading and 65.1 or higher in math.

3. For the 2021-22 school year, economically disadvantaged students will achieve a performance index of 75.6 or higher in reading and 75.9 or higher in math.

4. At Greenville High School earn a B or better in the four-year and five-year graduation rate.

Our TBT teams all have equal voices in determining the success of our schools. This planned learning community allows the staff and students to take ownership in identifying issues within the school and the support to address and implement changes for school improvement. Our work towards continuous improvement is ongoing and we are committed to helping our students perform better in all areas at GHS.
