They’ve been big part of the 4-H scene

Rolle and Knapp-two familiar faces

By George Starks

GREENVILLE- When it comes to the Darke County Fair and 4-H, Bill Rolle and Dave Knapp are two faces most everyone will recognize.

For many, Rolle would be connected with Versailles Wrestling while Knapp is well known as the owner of the local Ford Dealership.

At the fair, it’s a different story.

While having been retired from the wrestling scene for several years, Rolle is the auctioneer for the 4-H animals.

Getting his license in 1980, Rolle has been doing auctions for over 40 years.

“I really do this for the kids,” said a teary-eyed Rolle.  “I started doing this with my granddad Verly Rolle senior. It was because of him I started doing this and this is how I continue to honor him. I plan on doing this as long as I’m able.”

While Rolle is doing his thing on the auctioneers stand, Knapp is on the floor, buying the animals that are being auctioned off.

Knapp has been involved in 4-H for 27 years and doesn’t plan on stopping any time soon.

“4-H is a great program,” said Knapp. “It’s a great way to give back to the community and I’ll stay active in it for as long as God allows me. It teaches kids how to be responsible and they learn so much and it’s a great way to springboard into the world.”

So what does it mean to Knapp to be able to give back to the kids?

“I have kids approach me from 27 years ago and now they have their own children,” exclaimed Knapp.  “These kids are the future of Darke County. If I have someone that approaches me looking to come to work, they will be a top candidate.  4-H means that much to me.”

Knapp ended by giving God all the credit for being able to help others.
