On December 22, 2024, at approximately 11:00 PM, officers from the Union City Police Department were dispatched to the 1100 block of W. State Road 28, Union City, Indiana, in response to reports of gunfire in the area.
Upon arrival, officers were met by a female resident who stated she heard several gunshots and screaming from across the road near the bridge over the Little Mississinawa River approximately one hour earlier. She contacted police again after hearing additional shots and screaming at approximately 11:00 PM.
An officer approaching the bridge announced their presence and was met with gunfire from an unidentified male. Multiple rounds were fired at the officer, with bullets passing dangerously close. The officer did not return fire and was unable to immediately locate the suspect.
A male subject was later located at the scene and identified as Michael Fisher, 45, of Union City, Ohio. Fisher was found in possession of a 9mm handgun with an empty magazine and a locked-back slide. Officers also located a vehicle in the river, which contained multiple firearms, including a long rifle, a short-barreled rifle, and ammunition, along with two dogs belonging to the suspect.
During the incident, a nearby residence was struck by gunfire. A bullet penetrated the exterior wall of the home and was found in a bedroom. This bullet, consistent with a 9mm round, was collected as evidence.
Initially, Fisher claimed he had been shot multiple times, but officers determined he was uninjured. He was taken into custody without further incident.
Fisher has been charged with the following offenses:
Intimidation with a Deadly Weapon – Level 5 Felony
Pointing a Firearm – Level 6 Felony
Criminal Recklessness – Level 6 Felony
Attempted Murder – Level 1 Felony
Unlawful Carrying of a Handgun – Felony (prior conviction with a sentence exceeding 12 months)
Criminal Mischief – Level 6 Felony
The case remains under review by the Randolph County Prosecutor’s Office for additional charges.
The Union City Police Department extends its gratitude to the Randolph County Sheriff’s Department, Winchester Police Department, Indiana State Police, Darke County Sheriff’s Office, and Lynn Police Department for their assistance during this dangerous situation.
