Dear Editor:
Recently, the Darke County Republican Executive & Central Committees voted unanimously to endorse the Vote YES on Issue 1 Campaign. This is a critical priority for not just our party, but the business, agriculture, and pro-life communities. We joined the Ohio Chamber of Commerce, National Federation of Independent Businesses, Buckeye Firearms, Ohio Right to Life, and Ohio Farm Bureau in this endorsement. This isn’t a partisan issue- the Ohio Democrats introduced this exact same resolution in 2018, because the vast majority of Ohioans understand the importance of what this boils down to: protecting the laws of our land from outside interests.
We often complain about the speed of government, but our Founding Fathers understood that creating public policy is not one of impulse. This is why it takes a supermajority vote in Congress or a 75% ratification of states to amend the United States Constitution. More laws, more amendments, more government is never a good thing. Issue 1 follows this philosophy in requiring any new changes to the Ohio Constitution to pass with a 60% majority, a threshold that is still well below what is required federally.
The stability of our state is at stake– big money groups will throw everything at the wall to see what sticks. Bail reform, congressional redistricting, recreational marijuana, full-term abortions, transgender hormone therapy consent–these groups have, or have already have plans, to try them all. Our state constitution is not a playground for liberal interests in California or New York. It is a document to be protected, to be carefully considered, and to safeguard from trending social issues of the time.
Please join me in standing with law enforcement & the 2nd amendment, the business community, the farm community, the pro-life community to VOTE YES on Issue 1.
