William “Bill” Edgar Riegle, 92, of New Madison, Ohio, passed away on Sunday, November 7, 2021, at EverHeart Hospice Care Center in Greenville, Ohio.
He was born on February 14, 1929, in Fort Jefferson, Ohio, to the late Glen and Grace (Hittle) Riegle.
In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Riegle, whom he married on December 3, 1950; his daughter, Connie June (Riegle) Flatter; and his brother-in-law, Gene Cox.
Bill was a 1947 graduate of New Madison High School. He was a farmer and worked his way up through the Darke County Highway Department to become assistant superintendent and retiring after 30 years of service. In June of 1950, Bill met the love of his life, Betty June Kelch, of Willowdell, Ohio, at a local square dance. The couple was then married later that year on December 3rd. The wedding had to be postponed a couple weeks due to the blizzard that hit that year. Bill was stranded in Greenville, and after a couple days, the roads were still not clear, so he started walking. After a friend drove him part way, he managed to walk the remaining 10 miles to Willowdell to see Betty. They resided over 58 years on their farm outside of New Madison where they raised two children, Larry and Connie. Bill loved his family and enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Together, Bill and Betty were faithful members of the New Madison United Methodist Church.
Bill is survived by his son, Larry Glen Riegle and his wife Lisa, of Columbus, Ohio; his grandson, Derek Flatter and his wife Mandy along with children Landon, Ella, Amelia and Hudson, of Arcanum, Ohio, grandson, Aaron Flatter and his wife Pam, along with their son, William Perry, of New Madison, grandson, Jeremy Flatter and his wife Jessica, along with children, Taylor, Delaney and Adelin, of Pendleton, Indiana, and granddaughter, Emily Kelley and her husband, Jonathan, with their son, Oliver William of Columbus; his sister, Patty Cox of Tipp City, Ohio; his brother, George Riegle and his wife Janice, of Greenville; his son-in-law, Thomas Flatter; countless other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A Celebration of Bill’s life will be held at 2:00 PM, on Thursday, November 11, 2021, at Tribute Funeral Homes, Greenville Campus, with Pastors, David Richey and Carol Duffield officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery in Fort Jefferson.
Bill’s family will be receiving guests on Thursday, from 12:00 noon, until the time of the service at 2:00 PM. at the funeral home. Due to COVID-19, face coverings are optional but will be available at the funeral home for anyone who might need one.
