Dream Night: Beating the Weather God
Before the stars could battle for the Dream trophy, they first had to defeat an unexpected opponent: the Weather God.
With threatening forecasts looming over the area, officials moved hot laps from 6:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in an effort to stay ahead of the storms. However, just as preparations were underway, the Weather God seemed to veto the plan, sending heavy rain and even hail over the speedway.
Fortunately for the thousands of fans in attendance, the storm’s victory was short-lived.
The Eldora Speedway track crew delivered a phenomenal performance of their own. Working tirelessly, they restored the racing surface in remarkable fashion and had the track race-ready far quicker than many thought possible. In the end, the racers and track crew proved stronger than the weather, forcing the Weather God to concede defeat.
Pierce’s Dream Comes True
After the heat races and B-Features set the stage, the 32nd Dirt Late Model Dream feature delivered a memorable finale.
When the checkered flag waved after 100 laps, it was Bobby Pierce standing atop the mountain.
Starting from the seventh row, Pierce carved his way through the field with the smooth, calculated style that has earned him the nickname “The Smooth Operator.” Lap after lap, he picked off competitors and positioned himself for a charge to the front.
His reward was the biggest victory of his career at the Dream—a prestigious triumph worth $100,000 and a place in Eldora Speedway history.
Given the level Pierce has displayed throughout the season, this first Dream victory may very well be the beginning of a collection rather than a one-time achievement.
The top five in the 32nd Dirt Late Model Dream were:
- Bobby Pierce
- Max Blair
- Nick Hoffman
