Menacing
On July 6th, 2026, at approximately 1038 hours, I was dispatched to the area of the 1300 block of Ft. Jefferson Avenue, near the Greenville City Firearms Range, in the city of Greenville, in reference to a suicidal subject. Dispatch had received a call from the Veteran Crisis Hotline, stating Jeremy Applegate was calling them, claiming he was going to kill himself, and warned the employee that if any police officer approached him, he had a knife and a hammer and that he would kill the first officer he saw. While Officers from the Greenville Police Department checked various areas in the city that we knew Jeremy to be at, dispatchers from the Darke County Sheriff’s Office received a call from him and they advised he was being belligerent with them on the phone. The dispatchers were able to see a ping from his phone when he called and it was showing him in a wooded area behind the residence of 1376 Ft. Jefferson Avenue.
Officers as well as Deputies from the Darke County Sheriff’s Office searched the area along the railroad tracks, between the address of 1376 and the entrance of the firearms range. A Detective with the Sheriff’s Office assisted with the use of a drone as well, to attempt to locate Jeremy. We were advised by deputies at around 1230 hours that they could see his tent and hear him yelling back in a heavily wooded area behind the residence listed above. We responded to that location with them and located the tent with Jeremy inside. As we approached the tent I could hear Jeremy yelling “I will kill you” numerous times. When we were able to see Jeremy inside the tent we could see he had a hammer in his hand, as he continued to threaten to kill us all. Jeremy also stated at one point “I have a gun” Jeremy began swinging the hammer at us from inside his tent, creating holes in the tent wall with the claw of the hammer. At one point Jeremy struck Lt. Monnin with an unknown hard object that is believed to have been the hammer. I ordered Jeremy to drop the hammer numerous times and he continued to refuse, swinging the hammer.
Lt. Monnin advised Jeremy if he did not drop the hammer, he would be pepper sprayed. Jeremy continued to threaten to kill us with the hammer and refuse to drop it. Lt. Monnin sprayed Jeremy with pepper spray, and Jeremy continued to swing the hammer. I warned Jeremy I would tase him if he did not drop the hammer and come out of the tent. I advised Lt. Monnin and Sgt. Raffle that I would deploy my taser through one of the holes Jeremy created in the tent and that they could enter the tent then. Jeremy finally gave up and dropped the hammer when I armed the taser and pointed it at him. Jeremy crawled out of the tent and officers were able to get him detained. The handcuffs were gap checked and double locked, and Jeremy was escorted out of the woods.
Jeremy was transported to Wayne Hospital for a mental evaluation due to his suicidal and homicidal statements. He was placed under arrest for Aggravated Menacing 2903.21( A). Jeremy did knowingly cause Officers on scene to believe he would cause serious physical harm to them by actively swinging and trying to strike them with a hammer. Officers were in the course of their duties and responding to Jeremy’s original call of being suicidal when Jeremy knowingly completed these actions. Resulting in this charge being a felony of the fifth degree.
Once released from the hospital Jeremy was transported to the Darke County Jail and released to the jail staff.

Rich stated a man started yelling at him as he was in the yard. The man was described to being wearing a red cutoff shirt and wearing blue jeans. Kathleen was in their yard walking their dog. The man later identified as Steven Shaw, was screaming and yelling. Rich stated he could not understand what Steven was yelling about due to his slurred speech. Rich stated Steven started to approach his yard and walked approximately two feet into the yard. Rich stated he then walked towards the end of the driveway to keep Steven from coming closer. Rich stated Steven threatened to “kick my ass” as he told Steven to leave his property. Rich stated that Steven balled up his fists like he wanted to fight. Steven then walked back to the apartment at 609 Walnut Street where he lived when he found out officers were on the way.
There were two witnesses, Andrew Barnes and Michael Falknor, who stated they observed Steven screaming and yelling and stating Steven was drunk. Wanted Person
On July 8th, 2026, at approximately 2338 hours I apprehended a known wanted subject.
On the above date and approximate time, I was traveling South in the 1400 Block of Fort Jefferson Ave Greenville, OH on patrol when I observed Michael Crawford walking northbound in the roadway with Kimberly Dotson. I had previous knowledge that Michael had an active warrant for probation violation through Darke County Probation. I activated my cruiser lights and made contact with Michael. At this time, I told Michael he had an active warrant, so he was made aware of why I was speaking to him.
At this time, I observed Michael start to continually back up, I told Michael “let’s go” and was attempting to get him to walk toward my cruiser when he failed to comply with the order of a police officer and took off running away west bound and onto the property of 1376 FT. Jefferson Ave. Greenville, OH. I chased Michael for a short period around a row of small pine trees where he continually failed to comply with my orders. After back up units arrived Michael was placed under arrest and into handcuffs that were gap checked and double locked.
While Michael was handcuffed and in front of my cruiser I began a search of his person. I started to search his left side when I noticed a small clear baggie containing a crystal-like substance in his left hand. Officers ordered Michael to drop the baggie, he dropped the baggie on the ground and attempted to step on it with his foot to hide it.
Once Michael was searched, he was placed into the back seat of my cruiser and taken to the Darke County Jail where he was released to jail staff. The back seat of my cruiser was checked before and after the arrest with nothing located. The small baggie with crystal-like substance was collected and will be placed into evidence and sent to the lab for testing.
