GREENVILLE, Ohio – The 41st Annual Darke County Fair Friday Sampler will return on Friday, August 28, 2026, at the Darke County Fairgrounds, bringing together inspiration, education, and hands-on learning under the theme “A Creative Community.”
Hosted by the Darke County Town Square Quilt Club in partnership with Ohio State University Extension, the annual event will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and feature presentations on quilting, women’s wellness, houseplants, and creative arts.
The day will begin with a welcome from members of the Darke County Town Square Quilt Club and OSU Extension Educator Tina McGillvary, followed by a lineup of engaging speakers and demonstrations.
African-Indian Quilting
The morning session will feature Carroll Schleppi and Jeanne Schoenharl, who will explore the history, techniques, and artistry of African-Indian quilting. Participants will learn about this distinctive quilting tradition, its evolution, and how it is used today in clothing, home décor, and artistic expression. Attendees will also have an opportunity to view quilted samples demonstrating the intricate layered techniques that make this art form unique.
Schleppi discovered patchwork quilting after retiring from a career as a college professor and now creates one-of-a-kind quilted wall hangings and table runners inspired by generations of family needleworkers. Schoenharl, a retired English professor from Sinclair Community College, has shared African-Indian quilting programs throughout the region while combining her love of creativity and education.
Women’s Wellness Roadmap
Presented by Wayne HealthCare, this informative session will explore women’s health through every stage of life. Speakers Alaine Kirby, Family Nurse Practitioner, Lauren Henry, Executive Director of the Wayne HealthCare Foundation, and Karen Droesch, Registered Dietitian and Diabetes Educator, will share practical information on healthy weight management, nutrition, exercise, and reducing the risk of chronic diseases such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and osteoporosis.
The program will also feature a live Tai Chi demonstration, local wellness resources, and tools to support healthy living.
Featured Speaker: Kate Spencer
Following lunch, attendees will enjoy “The Fabric Whisperer: Creating Miniature Patchwork Quilts” presented by quilt artist Kate Spencer of Lady Kate Designs.
After a distinguished 35-year career as a college professor, Spencer discovered her artistic calling through patchwork quilting. Drawing inspiration from four generations of quilters in her family, she creates miniature quilts and table runners that blend traditional craftsmanship with artistic design.
Her presentation will include:
- Creating miniature patchwork quilts
- A special quilt trunk show
- Artist insights and techniques
- Audience question-and-answer session
Houseplants & Planters
The day will conclude with Caitlin Miller and Gina Miller, owners of Miller Flowers Greenhouse & Garden Center, who will share tips for selecting and caring for houseplants during Ohio’s colder months.
Caitlin Miller, a passionate horticulturist and educator, will discuss how indoor plants can improve living spaces, contribute to wellness, and thrive throughout fall and winter. Following the presentation, the first 50 guests will have the opportunity to participate in a complimentary make-and-take planter project and take home their own creation.
