GREENVILLE, OH — The Darke County Solid Waste District is pleased to announce the launch of a Propane Tank Recycling Program, beginning February 1, 2026, to provide residents with a safe and responsible disposal option for used propane tanks.
Propane tanks are pressurized containers and should never be placed in household trash or curbside recycling bins, as they pose a serious fire and explosion risk when crushed or compacted. This new program offers a safe alternative that protects residents, waste workers, and the environment.
The District will accept commonly used propane tanks, including 20-pound BBQ grill tanks and 1-pound camping propane cylinders. Tanks should be empty or nearly empty before drop-off.
“Propane tanks are one of the most difficult items to dispose of,” said the Darke County Solid Waste District Director, Krista Fourman Unger. “This program gives our residents a safe, convenient option while reducing the risk of fires, explosions, and injuries by throwing them in the trash.”
Collected tanks will be handled by county staff and transported to a recycling facility, where valuable materials such as steel are recovered and reused.
This program is offered in cooperation with the Darke County Engineer and the Darke County Highway Garage, supporting a collaborative effort to enhance safety and responsible waste management throughout Darke County.
