
Summertime in Ohio is perfect for enjoying the outdoors—but it can also bring extreme heat, power outages, and risks to vulnerable groups, including children, seniors, pets, and livestock. To help you stay safe, Ohio EMA is launching the Beat the Heat Ohio Summer Safety Series on social media. Each week will feature key safety and preparedness tips, including:
- Stay Safe on Extreme Heat Days
- Tip Highlights: Stay indoors if possible; stay hydrated; wear light-colored, breathable clothing; avoid extreme outdoor activities during the hottest hours; monitor heat index and heat watches/warnings.

“Summer is a great time to explore everything Ohio has to offer, but it’s important to know the risks that summer heat can bring,” said Ohio EMA Executive Director Sima Merick. “Stay informed, drink plenty of water, check on neighbors—especially those most vulnerable—and update your home emergency plan to include a cooling and power outage plan.”
