Robert Vannel Slates, 87, of Cary, NC, passed on April 24, 2026. He was born February 5, 1939, in Alma, MI to Evelyn and Harlan Slates.
Robert will be remembered for his strength, resilience, and dedication to his family. He was a Senior Research Director for DuPont from 1968-1992. He was Research Director for Londax, used in agricultural support of rice growth, the world over.
In his free time, you could find him tinkering in his workshop. He loved to use different woods to recreate different objects, usually something obscure, sometimes puzzles. The joy of creating was evident. He loved his figs; doling out cuttings to whoever showed interest. You could sometimes find him playing his guitar, piano or violin, to the extreme delight of his wife.
Robert is survived by his wife, Sandra, brother, Roger, son, Michael and his wife Carla and their daughter Leah.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 am Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at Greenville Union Cemetery with Pastor Keith Menter officiating.
