Edison State Community College
Lady Chargers Excel Both On and Off the Court
July 15, 2020
It is amazing when teams compete at the highest level and are poised to
possibly go all the way. What’s even more amazing is when these
athletes excel in the classroom as well. Not only did the Edison State
Community College Lady Chargers win the OCCAC Title, the District
Championship and advance to the National Tournament, but they are now
also being honored for their fantastic academic achievements!
With a very successful season on the basketball court cut short due to
our nation’s healthcare challenges, the Lady Chargers made the most of
their classroom studies. Finishing 7th OVERALL IN THE NATION, the
2019-2020 NJCAA Women’s Basketball team celebrated with six lady
chargers leading the way by being named Academic All-Americans.
Representing Edison State and being named All Academic First Team with
a 4.0 GPA were Madison Bakosh of Springboro and Allison Siefring of St.
Henry. Followed closely on the All Academic Second Team were Rebekah
New and Brogan McIver, both from Sidney, with a GPA of 3.80 or higher.
Coach Tim McMahon knows how well these Lady Chargers work to do their
best. “These young ladies are very dedicated student athletes on and
off the court. They represent the true meaning of “student athlete,”
and some of the best that have ever come through Edison State.”
But the story doesn’t end here. Two additional Lady Charger athletes
made All Academic Third team with a GPA of 3.6 or higher. Emily Powell
of Piqua and Mariah Baker of Springfield helped round out an exemplary
group of young, dedicated athletes. Nate Cole, Edison State’s Athletic
Director congratulated the Edison State student-athletes on their
academic honors. “I am very proud of all of them…this truly shows that
the Edison State Athletic Department is doing it right.”
As last season goes into the books as one of the best for Edison State,
Cole continues, “Excelling in all areas, winning, having wonderful
coaches, recruiting great student-athletes, focusing on academics and
sportsmanship…the future for Edison State Athletics is very bright!”
With the upcoming season in flux due to the pandemic, Edison State has
been working with the NJCAA in hope of continuing and with another
great season. Only time will tell, but we know the Lady Chargers will
continue to excel in the classroom even if the athletic season does not
go as planned.
