Along Life’s Way
Giving Advice
By Lois E. Wilson
It should be noted that advice is frequently the gift offered which few
people want to accept. It is difficult for many of us to restrain our
judgment and counsel. Being asked for advice inflates our egos. It
doesn’t occur to us that the receivers of the advice probably in
reality are trying to gain our support and approval of their own
choices.
Advice is cheap. Where do you go for it? Is it to the wrong people or
places? Are you searching for truth or affirmation? Accepting advice
can create dependency. Are you able to detect bad advice? A
Danish Proverb warns: “He who builds to every man’s advice will have a
crooked house.”
However, it has been observed that those who would benefit most from
advice are less likely to seek it. You can give advice, but that action
may not motivate anyone to follow it. Those who receive it may not
profit from your free gift. There are times when others want
advice—they need it, but do they heed it? Below is my verse to those
requesting advice:
ADVICE
If you should ask,
I would not mask
Nor shirk the task.
Sometimes advice
Is too precise
Or not concise.
Answers from me
Will always be
Heartfelt and free.
If you abhor it,
Do not deplore it—
You can ignore it!
The end of my advice is—you are wise if you don’t follow any advice
blindly. Always educate yourself to options and chose your life’s paths
based on knowledge and experience. Then you gain valuable lessons which
become advice you can share with others whether they want to abide by
it or not. Remember, it’s their choice.
