Along Life’s Way
Vanity or Sanity?
By Lois E. Wilson
Most people have some vanity. They care how they interact with and
appear to others. Fortunately over the years, techniques have advanced
to the point that many birth defects and injuries from accidents can be
corrected or greatly improved by surgical intervention.
Plastic surgery or cosmetic surgery can alter some of the results of
aging—hence began the face lift. As in my verse below, it is
often overdone:
THE HIGH COST OF LIFTING
Some folks yearn
To look young forever.
Hiding years is their whole endeavor—
Nip and pluck,
Lift and tuck,
Shift and puff,
Not enough.
They conclude—
¬ Once more under the knife
Is the answer
To a youthful life.
Now they're stuck—
¬ Face awestruck.
Snip and tuck
Gone amok!
A few develop an OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) about this type of
surgery. Both sexes are featured on TV asking for more implants, skin
fillers, repairs of previous surgeries, etc. They hope this time they
will achieve their goals. Some young adults opt for “looks” over
“books” and spend their college savings to acquire their vision of
perfection. My view on all this is in verse:
FILLING IN THE BLANK
Each face works hard for its wrinkles;
Smiles and frowns create its crinkles.
Surprise and fears,
Sadness and years—
The signs that measure
Aren’t always forgiving.
These lines are treasure;
They mark days of living.
It is time to exhibit maturity and choose health of mind “sanity” over valueless “vanity.” Recognize your real treasure.
